Union Pacific Rail Yard and Depot, Cheyenne Wyoming

This is the Union Pacific Depot in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  Built in 1887, and renovated and added on to in 1922 and 1929, today it houses a railroad museum and a restaurant.  It remains a major Cheyenne landmark.  These photographs were rather obviously taken fairly early on a March morning.

And this is the Union Pacific roundhouse in the rail yard. The railyard itself is a major Union Pacific rail yard.  The roundhouse is the home to Union Pacific 844, 838, 5511 and UP Challenger 3985, all steam locomotives.

  2. These pictures bring tears of remembrance, I lived in Littleton, CO, 3 miles from Columbine High School, I used to visit Cheyenne every now and then, just to see the huge Union Pacific Yard and the Depot also. How I miss living in the area. Thanks for putting these photographs here!!! You brought back MANY special memories!!

  3. How could one obtain a few feet of abandoned railroad tracks to be used as a little fencing for our church?

  4. Ties hare hard to find now, as they were soaked in creosote and are generally regarded as contaminated with a hazardous substance. Or at least that's my understanding. At one time, of course, ties were fairly easy to find, and newer ties are not so coated, so perhaps they're available somewhere.

I'm assuming you don't mean tracks, as tracks are incredibly heavy and would be difficult to work with. I actually have a single track that came with a piece of property when I bought it, and it's too heavy to really move.

  5. Thanks for this link Pat. As a retired Laramie High teacher, I have spent much time in Cheyenne and really enjoy the Depot. The old tie plant/yard site in Laramie is interesting even if it is a bit of an ecological disaster area.

  6. Neil, Laramie's rail yard is an impressive one, to say the least. I have some photos taken from the footbridge over the UP there, spanning about 20 years time from the time the first ones were taken and the last ones were taken.
